The Pilot Vanishing Point comes with an 18-karat gold nib that writes beautifully. It is much smoother than a steel or other stiff nib. Japanese Nibs Run Small, So Size Up

The Pilot Namiki Vanishing Point is a Japanese fountain pen. Like all Japanese fountain pens, the nib on the Vanishing Point runs about one size smaller than European nibs. So, if you normally prefer a fine nib, you should size up and get your vanishing point with a medium nib.

Pilot cartridges come in a variety of colors, are relatively inexpensive, and are easy to find.  The cartridges also mean far fewer ink mishaps.  For example, I've flown several times with my vanishing point in my breast pocket or clipped to my shirt and never had the pen explode or spill.
